This 1990 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI arrived as a running and driving car. What followed was a complete Collector Commission: a bare-shell restoration, five weeks of structural fabrication and alignment, a rebuilt engine and gearbox, factory-correct paint and period-authentic trim. The finished car won the Classic Car Restoration Showcase Award at the Concours of Elegance 2025.

The commission
The Peugeot 205 GTI is one of the defining performance cars of the 1980s. Light, direct and accessible, it earned its reputation through the quality of the driving experience rather than rarity or price. This commission set out to preserve that character while restoring every part of the car to a standard capable of standing beside far more exotic machinery.
Restoration from first principles
The car arrived running and driving, but the stripdown exposed the true scope of work. The shell was taken back to its core, every component was catalogued and hidden corrosion was cut out and repaired. Five weeks of fabrication and alignment addressed the chassis, floors, jacking points, inner wings and roof structure before the shell could progress.
The same discipline extended beneath the body. The engine and gearbox were completely stripped, assessed and rebuilt. Suspension, braking and drivetrain components were restored individually, while original fixings were catalogued, refinished or replaced as appropriate.
Factory character, concours execution
Authenticity governed the specification. The body was refinished in its factory-correct colour, with careful surface preparation, panel alignment and clear-coat finishing. The interior was restored using period-authentic materials and detailing so that the completed car retained the honesty and familiarity that made the 205 GTI special.
This was not an attempt to turn an accessible classic into something it never was. It was an exercise in revealing how much quality, significance and emotional value already existed within the original design.
An award-winning result
The completed Peugeot was presented at the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace in September 2025. Among some of the world’s most valuable and celebrated cars, it won the Classic Car Restoration Showcase Award.
That result captures the purpose of an Auto RARA Collector Commission: choosing a car with genuine meaning, defining the right standard, and applying the same depth of craftsmanship regardless of badge or market value. The 205 earned its place through authenticity, precision and execution.
